Liposuction of the Neck and Chin

What is liposuction?

Liposuction, also called “Lipo”, is an aesthetic surgery procedure performed to remove fat from any part of the body where it has collected over time.  Liposuction permanently removes fat cells thereby permanently altering the shape of the area being addressed.

What makes someone a good candidate for liposuction?

A good candidate for liposuction is a healthy individual, with a realistic outlook and with a relatively stable weight who is seeking to eliminate stubborn pockets of fat.

What makes liposuction of the neck and chin a popular procedure?

The neck and jaw area is one of the first things people notice when they look at someone’s face.  Fat pockets, a double chin, or jowls can be a distraction from an otherwise attractive appearance.

Chin and Neck liposuction can do a great deal to heighten an individual’s feelings of confidence and youth.

Will chin and neck liposuction work well for eliminating a double chin?

Over time, fat can collect under the chin and at the front of the neck, causing a fullness commonly called a “double chin”.

The fat causing the double chin can be removed with liposuction.  If the skin has retained sufficient elasticity, it may contract and tighten on its own.   If not, a neck lift may be the proper procedure to use.

Where is the procedure performed?

The procedure is the same day (outpatient) procedure.  It can be performed in the office.

What type of anesthesia is used for the procedure?

Sedation with local anesthetic or general anesthesia can be used.

How is the procedure performed?

Once the area has been prepared and the anesthetic has taken effect, small incisions the size of a pencil tip are used to gain access to the area.  One just underneath the chin and at the base of each earlobe.   Next, a cannula (flexible small tube) is inserted attached to a suction device into the fat of the neck and beneath the chin.  The excess fat is removed.

The length of time in surgery depends on the number and size of pockets to be addressed.

Follow-up care and recovery from chin and neck liposuction

Each patient is sent home after your liposuction with specific instruction for aftercare, any needed prescriptions, and an appointment for post-surgical follow-up.

The patient will need to wear a tight compression garment over the surgical area.

Taking regular short walks is recommended, but strenuous exercise should be avoided until the surgical team gives the okay.

What is the healing time?

Once the swelling goes down, the patient will be able to see the great results of their neck and chin liposuction procedure. Swelling goes down rapidly over the first month.  The final results are visible three months after the procedure.

Is chin and neck liposuction safe?

Liposuction of the chin and neck is quite safe.  An important factor in the safety of any surgical procedure is the experience and expertise of the surgeon performing the operation.
