Best Candidates
Laser hair removal is best used on individuals with light skin and dark hair. This is because in order for the laser to “find” the hair and effectively treat it, it has to be able to “see” it. Therefore, those with very light blonde hair may not be the best candidates. That being said, a large majority of individuals with varying skin tones and hair color can be considered for this treatment. It is a safe and effective treatment for both men and women on common areas such as the legs, arms, back, face and bikini.
What to Expect
At any given time, there are a certain number of hairs that are in an active growth phase, as well as another set that is in a resting phase. Because the laser treatment is not effective on the hair follicles that are not actively growing, multiple sessions are typically needed. On average, it takes about 3 to 5 treatments to permanently disable new hair growth. During the procedure, the skin is stretched slightly so that the laser can precisely target the hair follicle roots. The follicle absorbs the heat and ultimately falls off and stops re-growing. The series of treatments is designed to ensure that all hair growth is permanently suppressed. We can provide a cost estimate in your consultation based on the number of laser treatments you may need.
Laser Hair Removal Recovery
During treatment, patients will feel slight pressure on the area that is being treated. The laser beam can slightly sting, but cool temperatures will be applied between pulses to help with the patient’s discomfort. Although patients can resume normal activity after treatment, the treated area will look and feel similar to a light sunburn. Patients should avoid exercise for about 24 hours to allow the skin to calm, and sun exposure should be avoided. There is no downtime following laser hair removal and patients can usually resume their normal routine the same or next day.
Expected Cost
The average cost for laser hair removal is about $250 per session. This cost will vary depending on the size of the area being treated and the amount of hair to be removed. More importantly, the cost will be determined based upon how many sessions are needed in order to attain the desired results.
