Overview
Breast augmentation with a breast lift combines two cosmetic surgeries to allow the best possible outcome for patients. A breast augmentation with a lift is best for patients who want to alter the volume and contour of their breasts, but also need loose, sagging skin removed from the breast so the final result is full and perky. The cosmetic surgeons of Prima Center for Plastic Surgery in Duluth, GA can perform these surgeries at the same time or they can be done separately in staged surgeries to allow the patient the chance to see the impact of one surgery before deciding to have the other. A breast augmentation with a lift can be done with either saline or silicone implants, depending on the patient’s preference. What To Expect
Breast augmentation with a lift is an outpatient cosmetic procedure performed under general anesthesia. The recovery for this procedure is similar to one that occurs with an isolated breast lift, except patients tend to have additional discomfort and healing time due to the placement of implants. On average, a patient can resume normal daily activities after a full week, but strenuous exercises must still be avoided for roughly 4-6 weeks. This is to ensure that the surgical technique used for the lift is not compromised, and to avoid internal bleeding. Optimal results will usually appear within 3-6 months when the breasts have settled into their new shape and take on a natural, beautiful appearance.
Surgical Considerations
During this procedure, the surgeon will perform the breast lift first. The excess skin and tissue is trimmed away and the underlying tissues pulled tight. Before the incision is sutured, a breast implant will be placed, in most cases, under the chest muscle. Prior to surgery, multiple conversations will occur regarding the size and shape the patient desires so that there are no surprises after surgery. In cases of severe sagging, the nipple and areola may also be repositioned. A breast lift procedure does result in scarring, but an experienced surgeon makes every effort to make clean incisions and with proper scar care treatment, the scars become less noticeable over time.
Breast Lift Incision
The incision used during the breast lift portion of surgery will depend on how severe the sagging is. The most common incision pattern is one known as the “anchor” technique. This places the incision around the natural line of the areola, with an additional incision that extends vertically down the breast and along the natural crease.
Breast Augmentation
To increase breast size, implants are placed within the breast to add volume. This can be achieved with either a silicone or saline breast implant. But let’s start at the beginning.Six months before my wife’s 50th birthday, she announced to me that she wanted to look fit and fabulous on her special day and wanted to have a breast lift and augmentation. From my perspective my wife was more than adequately endowed and looked amazing. From her perspectives, however, she wanted to “look nicer” on vacation in her bathing suits.She researched other doctors, but Dr. Kumbla (or Dr. K as we call her) came highly recommended by someone in her medical spa. We also had the final discussions about size and shape, and Dr. K even encouraged us to share pictures with her of the desired end point.Based on the guidance we received from the pre-op visit, we made changes to our home to make those first two weeks post-surgery much more comfortable for my wife.Though the surgery was over five hours, Dr. K’s staff kept me notified every step of the way as I kept myself distracted in the waiting room working on my computer. When Dr. K came out and described to me the success of the surgery, I must confess to dropping a tear or two of grateful relief.Dr. K personally called the next morning to check in on the patient. Then again 2 days later. She happened to be in the area one afternoon in the first week, and she came by for a house call! (What doctor does this these days?)An additional nice feature of Dr. K’s approach is that you pay one price, and all the pre- and post-surgery activities are included. She wants you to be happy and she does everything she can pre- and post-surgery to make that happen.At this point, we are over four months post-surgery, and my wife couldn’t be happier with the results and with the journey getting. Dr. K and her staff create a truly handholding, white glove experience that is way beyond the current practice.We are so pleased.
