About Microneedling

When home skin care products aren't effective, but you aren't ready for surgery, consider nonsurgical skin rejuvenation treatments, like microneedling (also known as collagen induction therapy) to help create a softer glow. Prima Center Plastic Surgery in Duluth, GA offers microneedling, either with or without PRP therapy, which is quickly becoming one of the most popular skin rejuvenation treatments asked for at our office.

Microneedling uses a handheld device with fine-gauge needles attached to the end to safely and effectively create micro-injuries in the needed areas of the skin. These micro-injuries trigger the body's natural production of collagen and elastin, two nutrients that increase the health and appearance of your skin. Once the skin heals, it regenerates with a new, fresh layer that looks and feels younger. Easily combined with other skin treatments, like serums or PRP (platelet-rich plasma), microneedling can help improve facial texture and tone, reduce stretch marks, scars, and pores. Schedule a consultation at Prima Center Plastic Surgery to learn more about the benefits of microneedling and ways to customize the treatment for your skin needs and goals.

Ideal Candidates

You may benefit from microneedling if you have slight to moderate skin issues, like rough skin texture or low elasticity. Microneedling treatments can also reduce the appearance of stretch marks, scars, and pores. The results following microneedling do not happen overnight so patients should understand expectations and be willing to wait a bit before seeing the results of your microneedling treatment. The collagen and elastin will need time to have an effect on the skin. Once the skin begins to regenerate, patients will see a complexion that appears more healthy and vibrant.

Procedure Technique

Microneedling is performed in a treatment room in about 30 – 60 minutes with numbing cream or a local anesthesia if requested, but most patients feel mild or no discomfort. The skin being treated will be cleansed before the microneedling handpiece is passed evenly over. The fine needles will go over the skin multiple times, creating tiny punctures. After the microneedling is performed, many of our patients receive PRP therapy, which is a topical treatment platelet-rich plasma/vitamin-infused serum that can be applied for deeper penetration of the nutrients into the skin. This therapy helps optimize the results and also assists in the overall healing process.  Hyaluronic acid is used during the treatment to help reduce the visibility of fine lines and wrinkles while retaining moisture to the skin, creating a plumping effect.

What to Expect

You may have some swelling and redness for about a day, but this should subside quickly on its own. It may take about 1 – 2 months as the collagen and elastin levels increase before you see visible improvements in the health and appearance of your skin. You should plan to get about 4 – 6 maintenance treatments every 4 – 6 weeks for optimal results and lasting skin health.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does microneedling cost?
The cost of microneedling will vary depending on the size of the area being treated and what exactly is being addressed. The number of treatments in your plan will also create some price fluctuation. During your initial consultation, we will perform a skin assessment and develop your unique treatment plan. Prima Center Plastic Surgery offers specials on skin treatment packages so we invite you to check back to see what specials we have.

What exactly is microneedling?
Microneedling, also referred to as collagen induction therapy, is a skin rejuvenation treatment that helps smooth and clear your skin for better tone, texture, and feel. Collagen is a naturally occurring fibrous protein that helps keep your skin vibrant, smooth, and supple. Over time and as we age, the natural supply of collagen in the skin is depleted, and the skin can lose it's "glow." Microneedling creates small puncture wounds in your skin that work to increase collagen production and generate new skin cell growth. Once healed, the skin appears refreshed, brighter, and healthier.

Can I microneedling be combined with other treatments?
During the microneedling process, the punctures (or channels) that are created in the skin make it easier for other treatments to penetrate the deeper layers. This is why many of our patients choose to have PRP therapy with their microneedling treatment. Vitamin-rich serums or platelet-rich plasma (PRP) can be massaged into these channels for optimal results and healing power. During your consultation, we can discuss what treatments may be blended with microneedling and which would most benefit your skin.

How many treatments are recommended for optimal results?
Most of our Duluth area patients receive approximately 3 – 6 microneedling sessions to achieve their best results. These sessions can be safely performed every 4 – 6 weeks as needed.

Is microneedling safe for everyone?
Microneedling is safe for all skin types and tones. However, it is not recommended for individuals with live acne, for those using Accutane, who have open wounds, or for pregnant or nursing women.
